Meet the Fable Refrigerator

This all-in-one fridge and garden appliance functions as your regular fridge and freezer with an added compartment called the Grow Cell. The Fable Refrigerator is still only 36 inches wide— the width of your standard fridge— so you don't have to make room for a new or bigger appliance to be able to grow your own food.

The Grow Cell

The Grow Cell works as a tall vertical pull-out drawer to allow for easy harvesting. It houses a vertical hydroponic farm with a climate-controlled, self-sustaining environment that can grow a variety of fruits and vegetables with minimal user maintenance. At the top, the Grow Cell uses a Nutrient Film Technique system for lightweight crops, such as lettuce, microgreens, and herbs. On the bottom, it uses a Wick system for heavyweight crops like berries, tomatoes, and miniature fruits.

Why Hydroponics?

There are several benefits to hydroponics, including the ability to grow a variety of fruits and vegetables during any season, anywhere in the world. Thanks to the enclosed climate-controlled environment, you can simulate the perfect growing conditions no matter what the weather is like outside. When plants' needs are perfectly met, they grow faster, too.

Hydroponic farming doesn't use soil, so there are no soil diseases. There is no need for pesticides or weed killers, meaning you can grow truly organic produce, free from any chemicals. Additionally, the closed loop system without soil means there is no water waste from drainage or runoff into the ground.

Our Impact

By 2050, our Earth's population will reach 10 billion people, meaning we need to increase our food production by more than 70%. We also have less farmable soil than ever before. We only have 60 years of farmable soil left. So, if we can't increase our food production using conventional in-ground agriculture, we need to do it hydroponically and in our own homes.

The average American spends $751 on fruits and vegetables every year, most of which gets thrown away before it's eaten. By growing your own produce and only harvesting what you want to eat when you want to eat it, you're saving money and decreasing food waste.

When you're using a Fable Refrigerator, you're eating more nutritious food as well as minimizing your impact on the environment. Produce usually travels over 1500 miles by plane, truck, and car before it reaches your table— a process that can take up to fifteen months. Not only does this create a lot carbon emissions, but fifteen-month-old produce is severly nutrient-deficient, even after it is chemically-treated or cryogenically frozen. Produce is most nutritious only for the first 24 hours after harvest. The Fable Refrigerator gives you immediate access to freshly-harvested nutrient-dense fruits and vegetables.  And, because your food doesn't have to travel thousands of miles to reach your table, you're also reducing your carbon footprint.

Our Future

It doesn’t have to stop at a farm in your fridge. The future of Fable is a new line of appliances that normalize growing food at home and indoors. The Fable Evergarden is a full-farm appliance dedicated solely to the production of crops. It's counterpart, the Fable Sprout is a smaller, more accessible version that can be housed in an office space, college dorm, or a cramped apartment. Imagine if we could use Fable to reach into food deserts and provide food insecure families a way to have nutrient rich meals at their fingertips.

The future of farming is hydroponic, and it's in your home.
